PREMs (Patient-Reported Experience Measures) and PROMs (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures)
Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are essential tools in healthcare for assessing the quality of care and outcomes from the patient's perspective. In the context of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), they can provide valuable insights into the patient's experience during their stay and their recovery after discharge.
PREMs are a set of questions or tools designed to capture the patient's personal experiences and perceptions of their interactions with the healthcare system, healthcare professionals, and the care they receive. These measures focus on the patient's experience and satisfaction with their healthcare journey. PREMs can be administered at various points in the patient's care, including during their stay in the ICU and afterwards.
In the context of an ICU survey, PREMs include questions that inquire about communication, dignity and respect, involvement in care, emotional support, and information provision.
PROMs are tools or questionnaires that focus on capturing the patient's self-reported health and quality of life outcomes. These measures help assess the impact of healthcare interventions on the patient's well-being, functioning, and symptoms. In the ICU context, PROMs can be used to evaluate a patient's physical and mental health, both during their ICU stay and after discharge.
For an ICU survey, PROMs include questions that address physical health, mental and emotional well-being, ongoing issues and support including support and recovery.
