Plasma exchange therapy (or therapeutic plasma exchange, TPE) has become a cornerstone in treating complex immune-mediated and hematological conditions. By selectively removing a patient’s plasma and with it, harmful antibodies, immune complexes, or toxins, TPE helps restore balance and improve outcomes when standard treatments fall short.
When and Why It’s Used
TPE is most often applied in:
Autoimmune diseases: Myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus
Neurological disorders: CIDP, multiple sclerosis relapses
Hematological conditions: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), autoimmune hemolytic anemia
Toxin removal: Selected poisonings and drug overdoses
Careful patient selection, vascular access management, and close monitoring are essential to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
